Now this is a Coupé SUV that I can get behind. This X4 comes from that sweet spot in BMW's lineup where they absolutely nailed the recipe. Yes, the facelift arrived in 2021 with a few updated looks and gadgets, but if you're after the M40i specifically, this pre-facelift is the one you want. There are a couple of very good reasons for that, and the biggest one sits under the bonnet.
The updated B58 straight-six is, in my opinion, one of the greatest engines BMW has ever built. It's earned a reputation for being incredibly strong, smooth and reliable, while delivering the kind of performance that never gets old. Start it up, give it some throttle, and you'll immediately understand why enthusiasts rave about it. It sounds fantastic, pulls hard through every gear and just has so much character. It's one of those engines that makes you look for excuses to go for a drive.
Then there's the balance. Sure, you could stretch to an X4M, but for everyday use I honestly think the M40i is the sweeter package. The suspension isn't overly stiff, so it remains comfortable enough to drive every day, but the moment you switch it into Sport+ it completely changes personality. Suddenly you've got 265kW launching you down the road while the exhaust cracks and burbles exactly the way a proper performance BMW should. The newer facelift cars are noticeably quieter, and if you ask me... I'll happily take the pops and bangs every single time.
